What is GPS tracking?
GPS tracking is a system of devices that allow satellites to precisely locate a GPS enabled device anywhere on earth. Recent advances in the systems that support GPS tracking devices allow them to report a vast array of information including where the GPS tracking device was, how long it was there, where it is currently, and where it is going based upon it’s speed and direction of travel. Some GPS tracking devices also allow for the transmission of additional information such as data from a vehicles on-board-computer offering: engine status, mileage, fuel efficiency, etc…What components are involved in a GPS tracking system?
Satellites: There are many GPS satellites in orbit, continuously sending information to devices on the ground… the good news is, you don’t have to pay for the satellites!GPS receiver: This is a device that picks up the signals that are being sent from the satellites. A GPS receiver must collect data from at least 4 satellites to determine its position. The three main categories of GPS tracking devices include:
Handheld Solutions: Such as cell phone gps tracking
Passive Download Vehicle-Based Solutions: Installed in a vehicle and store GPS data.
Real-Time Vehicle Based Solutions: Installed in a vehicle and actively send data in real time that can be accessed by vehicle owners, managers, or concerned parents.
